The proverb “Eating an apple a day will keep the doctor away,” is probably the first universal health food advice published. How old is this proverb? I don’t know, but it was a common proverb over a 100 years ago. This morning I read an article (published on October 30, 2013) from the Health section of the Chicago Tribune about the health benefits of eating apples. This article apparently came from Lori Zanteson, who wrote it in the Environmental Nutrition Newsletter Premium Health News Service. I am giving excerpts here from the article. “One medium apple is only 95 calories, but packs a plump dose of health-protecting plant chemicals known as polyphenols, a filling 17 percent DV (Daily Value, based on 2,000 calories per day) of dietary fiber, and a healthy 14 percent DV of the powerful antioxidant, vitamin C. (Note from Magicland Farms: Some varieties of apples, like Calville Blanc D’ Hiver, have more than 100 percent of the DV of Vitamin C. Northern Spy is also endowed with loads of Vitamin C.)
Composed of more than 4,000 flavonoids, a category of polyphenols, apple consumption has long been studied for its role in disease prevention, including several cancers–breast, larynx and ovarian. Eating just one apple a day was shown to reduce risk of colorectal cancer by more than one-third, according to a study in a 2010 issue of the European Journal of Cancer Prevention.
Several studies show that consuming apples and apple juice may protect against symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and oxidative brain damage that can lead to memory loss. In addition, drinking apple juice was shown to improve dementia-associated behavior and mood in Alzheimer’s patients, according to a study published in the 2010 American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias.”
Enjoy today since it looks like we will have at least a taste of Indian Summer. While tomorrow will be even warmer, clouds and some rain are likely. While the weather is going to return on Friday to what we experienced earlier this week, something is afoot for next week and it looks relatively pleasant. It appears that for a few days, perhaps even longer, the weather will cease moving from west to east and stagnate. The west looks to be caught in the cold stormy area and the east in a mild, drier air mass with a large high building up. Since it will be November, and the days are so short, I can’t see it getting really warm, just mild, but other than that I guess it could be categorized as Indian Summer. (I still can’t figure out how it got actually hot (near 90F) in mid March of 2012 with days still being relatively short and the sun still that not high in the sky.)
Yesterday we picked the SunSugar and Jasper cherry tomatoes that we have growing in our high tunnel (unheated greenhouse with a 12 foot ceiling) which protected them from frost. We now have a good supply of these tasty, fresh cherry tomatoes.
When we open at 10AM (hopefully with the sun shining brightly) we will have:
- cherry tomatoes
- Green and colored bell peppers, Ancho and Jalapeno peppers
- Sweet onions
- Beets without tops
- Winter Squash: Acorn, Heart of Gold, Celebration, Butternut, Blue Hubbard
- Freshly dug Carrots (by the pound, 1/2 peck, and 1/2 bushel)

- Asian pears and Royal Riviera Pears
- MANY varieties of apples including: Mutsu/Crispin, Golden Delicious, Spartan, Jonathan, Splendor, Empire, Golden Russet, Tolman Sweet, Kandil Sinap, Jonagold, RedGold, Jonagored, Fuji, Northwest Greening, Idared, Roman Beauty, Calville Blanc D’Hiver, Hawaii, Honeycrisp, Gala, Cortland, Stark Jumbo, Red Delicious and samplings of Jonalicious, King David, Court Pendu Plat, SunCrisp, and Ashmead’s Kernel.
- LARGE selection of pumpkins from miniature to giant, including many different colors such as white, tan, yellow, green, and of course orange! A large, colorful selection of Indian Corn, dried corn stalks, as well as nice quality straw bales made from oat straw for $5 each and dried corn stalks.
